Acupuncture for Menstrual Regulation

90% of women are affected by Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) at some stage or another. The menstrual cycle is a very delicate balance of hormones and can become easily unbalanced. Acupuncture is exceptionally successful at treating both the psychological and physical symptoms of PMS.

Symptoms include:

Mood swings and depression, tearfulness or feeling low, tiredness, fatigue or lethargy, tension or unease, irritability, clumsiness / poor coordination, difficulty in concentrating, altered interest in sex, sleep disorders, food cravings, aggression and loss of self-control.

Physical symptoms include:

Breast tenderness, swollen / bloated feelings, puffiness of face, abdomen or fingers, weight gain, headaches, appetite changes, acne or other skin changes, constipation or diarrhoea, muscle or joint stiffness, general aches and pains, especially backache, abdominal pain / cramps, and exacerbation of  migraine, asthma or rhinitis.

The most common menstrual problems that Acupuncture can treat are

Acupuncture for Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue grows and functions outside of the uterus.  This may include endometrial tissue growing around the ovaries, uterine wall, fallopian tubes, vagina, bladder, umbilicus etc. These endometrial cells respond to hormonal fluctuations and bleed with the cycle causing intense pain and inflammation. Scar tissue then forms and can bind the organs together (womb, fallopian tubes etc). These cysts are mostly 3 – 4 cm in diameter but can grow to as large as 15cm. Endometriosis can take many forms but it is often characterised by painful periods with dark menstrual blood and clotting. Numerous studies have been completed and the results are conclusive, Acupuncture is very effective at relieving the pain associated with endometriosis, and in some cases as effective as pharmaceutical intervention.  It is also very effective for improving the menstrual cycle and thus the chances of conceiving.

Menopause

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the reproductive function is governed by the kidneys. A woman’s kidneys need sufficient energy in order to support fertility, libido. As a woman gets older her kidney energy diminishes and this eventually leads to menopause. At a hormonal level, less oestrogen is produced as we get older and when the oestrogen reduces significantly, so do menstrual periods. Progesterone will also decrease however, the pituitary gland will continue to produce high levels of FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinising Hormone). These imbalances caused by hormone fluctuations will give rise to emotional disturbances such as mood swings, anxiety, insomnia ,hot flushes, headaches ,

Acupuncture offers a drug free and natural solution to help rebalance the hormonal fluctuations that women experience during menopause.
